What is Psyllium Husk?

Psyllium (Plantago ovata), is a short-stemmed medicinal herb from the Plantaginaceae family. Its Indian name ‘Isabgol’ derives from two Sanskrit words, ‘asp’ and ‘ghol’, meaning “horse ear,” due to the shape of its seeds. Commonly referred to as ispaghula, sheetabeeja, aspaghol, isofgolu, ashwagolam, aspagol, ashwakarna, bazarqutuna, sand Plantain, psyllium husk, blond Psyllium and spogel seeds. Psyllium is native to India and the Mediterranean and is cultivated worldwide.

Psyllium Husk, which is the mucilage coating surrounding the seed, is recognized as pure dietary fiber. Its nutritional profile mainly consists of glycosides, proteins, polysaccharides, vitamin B1, and choline. Primarily composed of hemicellulose—a complex carbohydrate which is partially broken down in the colon, where it serves as nourishment for beneficial intestinal flora.

Psyllium powder is produced from these seed coverings and is rich in soluble fiber. This soluble fiber serves as a source of energy for beneficial bacteria in the colon, aiding in the body’s natural elimination process. Additionally, it helps slow down food absorption and retains water, promoting healthy and well-formed bowel movements.

Psyllium Kha-Kha Powder also known as Psyllium Industrial Powder, is a byproduct of psyllium husk processing. It is primarily used to prevent soil erosion, as animal feed (especially for horses), and in veterinary medicine. Additionally, it serves in constructing pathways and surfaces for landscaping and garden design.

Water Absorption: The husk can absorb 14 times its weight in water, forming a gel-like substance that aids digestion. Seeds can soak water up to 3% of its weight.

Health Benefits: The natural laxative property of Psyllium husk gel helps in absorbing harmful toxins and bacteria present in the intestine and relieve constipation and diarrhea by promoting digestive health. Also, it lowers cholesterol and blood sugar levels, enhances satiety, and supports weight loss.
